Coiba Prison

Coiba’s Prison Past

Coiba Island was once home to a notorious prison that operated from 1919 to 2004. Used to isolate dangerous criminals and political prisoners, it gained a dark reputation during Panama’s military dictatorship. Today, the abandoned prison stands in stark contrast to the island’s natural beauty, offering a glimpse into Coiba’s complex history.
